David Demaree Banta (b. 1833; d. 1896) received both his Bachelor of Science degree (1855) and his law degree (1857) from Indiana University. He served six years as a judge of the Franklin Circuit Court (1870-1876) and twelve years as a member of the Indiana University Board of Trustees (1877-1889). In 1889 he became the law school's first Dean, serving until his death in 1896.
