INDIANA LAW ANNOTATED November 18 Vol. 1, No. 12 LAW SCHOOL TO CELEBRATE 150TH BIRTHDAY The Law School will celebrate its 150th birthday during the 1992-1993 academic year. A "Sesquicentennial Task Force" of faculty and students appointed by Dean Aman is currently considering a wide variety of programs to celebrate and commemorate this important event. The task force is especially soliciting student participation in the celebration. All students are encouraged to attend a meeting on Tuesday, November 19, at noon in Room 124 to discuss how the student body can help commemorate the sesquicentennial. If you are unable to attend but have ideas, questions, or comments about student participation, please direct them to the student members of the Task Force, Jamie Hetzel (1L) and Sarah Riordan (2L) . The other members of the Task Force are Pat Baude, Doug Boshkoff, Fred Gate, Steve Conrad, Mary Ellen O'Connell, and Harry Pratter. PROFESSOR HOFF TO SPEAK ON WOMEN AND LEGAL SYSTEM Professor Joan Hoff of the Indiana University History Department will discuss her recent book Law, Gender, and Injustice on Thursday, November 21 at 7 p.m. in Room 122. The talk, sponsored by the Women's Law Caucus and Law Students for Choice, will address women and the legal system. Refreshments will be provided. APPOINTMENTS CANDIDATE TO VISIT Hugh Baxter, a Stanford Law School graduate who is currently clerking for retired Justice Brennan, will visit the law school as a candidate for appointment on November 25 and 26. Mr. Baxter obtained a Ph.D in philosophy at Yale before pursuing a law degree. He will speak at 12:15 on Monday in the faculty lounge on the 1917 Espionage Act. Students who would like to meet with Mr. Baxter should see the student members of the appointments committee, Debra Schroeder or John Yarger. SCHOOL HOSTS MINORITY LAW DAY The Law School hosted a very successful Minority Law Day program on Saturday, November 9th. The program, which is sponsored by the Admissions Office, offers information about law school to prospective students. Over 80 minority students attended the program. Dean Motley would like to thank Professor Kevin Brown, Minority Coordinator Karen Hodge, the members of BALSA, LLSA, AALS, and other student volunteers for all their help in pulling off this fine program. STUDENTS COMPETE IN ADVOCACY, NEGOTIATIONS COMPETITIONS The National Moot Court Team was in Chicago to participate in the regional round of the national competition. The team members are Jennifer Jordan, Cynthia King, Bruce Brightwell, Moira Squier, Richard Butler, and John Colvin. The Chicago Area teams will compete next weekend; Steve Hardin, Alan Irvin, Josetta Cullotta, Matt Miller, Robert Squier, Courtney Tobin, Stacia Yoon, Charles Gering and Suzanna Buchko are team members. The school also fielded two negotiations teams that competed this past weekend at Notre Dame. The team members are Scott Hanson, Jim Joven, Jennifer Newton, and Randy Lloyd. Good luck and congratulations to all team members. NEWS FROM THE FACULTY Professor Hoffmann will be traveling to San Francisco this week to present a paper at the annual meeting of the American Criminology Society. The paper will be a progress report on the National Study of Juror Decision-Making in Capital Cases, a research project funded by the National Science Foundation which involves interviews with jurors who have served in capital cases. Professor Hoffmann is in charge of the project in Indiana. Jack Past is working as Professor Hoffmann's primary research assistant on the project, and Ron Harmeyer and Janet Parsanko (along with Jack) have been conducting the juror interviews. Professor Hoffmann is also working on contributions to two books. He is writing a chapter on the Eighth Amendment for "After 200 Years: The Bill of Rights in Modern America," to be published by Indiana University Press. And he has agreed to write an essay on the juvenile death penalty for "Commentaries on the Law of Child, Parent, and State," which is being sponsored and edited by the University of Pennsylvania Law Review. NEWS FROM LAW STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS: ...BLSA Plans for Next Semester BLSA will hold its last general meeting of the semester Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 12:10 pm in Rm. 214. ALL students are still encouraged to become members, regardless of race, color, or ethnic identity. We want to thank all students and faculty who have been supportive of our efforts to bring attention to issues important to the African-American community. Next semester, we plan to have the annual Barrister's Ball, the BLSA Symposium, and the Martin Luther King Day Celebration. BLSA will also send two teams to the Frederick Douglas Moot Court Competition. We also plan to organize a panel discussion of the University's celebration of Black History Month.
