INDIANA LAW ANNOTATED Vol.5, No.5 Sept. 27, 1993 DON'T FORGET TO DONATE YOUR BLOOD THIS WEEK!!!! The American Red Cross and Delta Theta Phi would like to thank all of you who signed up to give blood this week. Each of you will be getting a reminder telephone call on the night before you give blood. PLEASE, DON'T FORGET! The American Red Cross is located at 409 East 7th Street, across from the Poplars building, between Dunn and Grant. The Law School has a large sign up and soon will receive the totals from the Law/MBA Challenge to determine once again if law students care more about the health of our community than those greedy, money-grubbing business students. There will be a Law/MBA get together on October 8 for all those who give blood. The site is to be determined, and the event will feature free food, compliments of the American Red Cross. Constance Baker Motley to be Distinguished Jurist in Residence Next Week The Honorable Constance Baker Motley, Senior District Judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, will visit the law school from October 4-8 as a distinguished jurist in residence. She will speak in the Moot Court Room at 3:30 Wednesday, Oct. 6. Judge Motley's remarkable career spans almost five decades. Her work in that time has been responsible for some of the most extraordinary changes in American culture during our history. After graduation from Columbia Law School in 1946, she went to work for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund under then chief counsel Thurgood Marshall. During the 40's and 50's, she travelled the country trying civil rights cases, and arguing cases in the federal appeals courts. She represented, among others, James Meredith in his fight to enter the University of Mississippi, and Charlene Hunter and Hamilton Holmes in their attempt to enter the University of Georgia. She was known for her skill as an oral advocate, and argued ten cases before the United States Supreme Court between October 1961 and December 1964, winning nine. She was the author of major briefs in Brown v. Board of Education, and had a hand in many of the cases you studied in Constitutional Law. In 1964, Judge Motley became the first African-American woman elected to the New York State Senate, and after that, President of the Burrough of Manhattan. In that position, she became the only woman on the powerful New York Board of Estimate. When Lyndon Johnson appointed Constance Baker Motley to the Southern District of New York in 1966, she joined only four other women on the federal district court bench, and became the first female African-American federal judge. In 1983, her string of firsts continued as she became Chief Judge of that court. Judge Motley will visit many classes during her visit here. Her full schedule will be announced next week.
