INDIANA LAW ANNOTATED Vol.7, No. 1 August 29, 1994 JUSTICE ROMERO, PHILIPPINES SUPREME COURT, TO SPEAK NEXT WEEK The Honorable Flerida Ruth P. Romero, justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, will speak on "The Constitution and Legal System of the Philippines" on September 7 at noon in the Moot Court Room. Justice Romero received her LL.M from the I.U. School of Law in 1955, and was a member of the faculty of the University of the Philippines School of Law until 1985. In 1986, she was appointed Secretary General of the Philippines Constitutional Commission and served as Special Assistant to President Corazon Aquino. Justice Romero serves as President of the Women's Judges Association, an organization that includes all of the women judges in the Philippines. During her distinguished career, she has traveled throughout the world, lecturing on human rights and the status of women. PREVIEW OF FALL EVENTS: VISITORS, LECTURES, INDIANA SUPREME COURT Visitor From Practice; The Visitors from Practice program brings distinguished attorneys to the school to share their expertise with students and faculty. Raphael Prevot, who serves as Labor Relations counsel for the National Football League, is this year's first visitor from practice, September 27-30. Mr. Prevot is a 1984 graduate of the Law School. His responsibilities include representing the NFL teams in labor dispute litigation and preparing and defending the collective bargaining agreement between NFL management and players. He will be visiting a number of classes during his stay. Jerome Hall Lecture; Joseph Raz, noted legal philosopher, will deliver the first annual Jerome Hall lecture on October 7. Described in a recent symposium devoted to his work as "one of the greatest legal thinkers of our age," Raz has written widely in legal philosophy. His books include THE CONCEPT OF A LEGAL SYSTEM (1970), PRACTICAL REASON AND NORMS (1975), THE AUTHORITY OF LAW (1979) and THE MORALITY OF FREEDOM (1986). Indiana Supreme Court Arguments; The Indiana Supreme Court will hold oral arguments in the Moot Court Room on October 5 at 11:00 a.m. TTie briefs in the case, Burness v. Indiana Farmers Mutual Insurance Group, will be on reserve in the library later in the month. The Justices have indicated that they would enjoy talking to students after the arguments about oral advocacy. Harris Lecture; Martha Minow, professor at Harvard Law School, will deliver the Harris Lecture on November 17. Professor Minow has written extensively on feminism and law. Moot Court Board Named This year, the Moot Court Board will prepare the problem for, and administer, the Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition, an intramural competition open to all second-year students. Members of the Board also will represent the Law School in intermural competitions. White NEWS FROM THE FACULTY Philippa Carroll Tanford entered the world on July 26. You can see this beautiful baby on the door of dad, Alex Tanford. Welcome to new faculty. Steve Johnson joins the faculty from the Internal Revenue Service Chief Counsel Office in Jacksonville, Florida. He received his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1981, where he was managing editor of the law review. He was in practice in New York before joining the I.R.S. Steve will be teaching a variety of tax courses, and is the faculty adviser to the Moot Court program. Lisa Farnsworth-Law returns to the legal writing faculty this year. She is a 1982 graduate of the law school who previously taught legal writing in 1984-86. After a clerkship with the Indiana Court of Appeals, Lisa has had a number of legal positions including deputy public defender and staff attorney at SLS. She joins us from the Indiana Attorney General's office. Cynthia Reichard, a 1984 graduate of the law school where she served as Note Editor for the law journal, has joined the legal writing faculty this year. Cynthia has been in practice in Chicago with Hinshaw & Culbertson, where she served as attorney for publications. Before that, she served as staff attorney for the Special Commission on the Administration of Justice, created after Operation Greylord revealed widespread corruption in Chicago's courts. Susan Robel, a 1991 graduate of Boston University School of Law where she was an Article Editor for the law journal, has also joined the writing faculty. While in Boston, Susan was an attorney in the litigation department of Nutter, McClennan & Fish. Welcome Visiting Faculty. We are very happy to welcome Paul Craig, who visits us again from Worchester College, Oxford, where he is a Fellow and Reader in Law, to teach Administrative Law. Professor Craig, who teaches administrative and constitutional law, is the author of several books, including the major British text on administrative law. And Where Are.... Several faculty are on leave this year, or visiting elsewhere. Steve Conrad is on sabbatical this fall. Kenneth Dau-Schmidt is visiting at the University of Wisconsin law school all year. Ann Gellis is visiting this year at Rutgers Law School. Lynne Henderson is on sabbatical for the year, and doing research at Stanford. Joe Hoffmann will be a Fulbright scholar in Japan this fall, at the University of Tokyo. Aviva Orenstein is visiting at Cornell this fall. Several faculty members have accepted new positions. Dene Nagel has accepted a new position as Dean of Research and Vice Provost, University of Maryland at College Park. Mark Adams will be teaching up north, at Valparaiso University School of Law. Mike Barren has returned to private practice in Cincinnati. Carol Parker is now teaching at the University of Tennessee College of Law.
