On March 2, he will present a paper on "The Role of Christianity in the Professional Lives of Ten Practicing Lawyers" at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in St. Louis, Missouri. Professors Lisa Farnsworth and Seth Lahn successfully concluded a 42 U.S.C. § 1983 lawsuit against the City of Bloomington alleging police brutality against a young Bloomington resident. The I.C.L.U. was co-counsel on the case. The officer, who was subsequently demoted and suspended in connection with a similar incident, is now facing charges filed with the Board of Public Safety by a fellow officer arising our of the arrest that was the subject of the civil suit. David Fidler has had his article entitled "Globalization, International Law, and Emerging Infectious Diseases" accepted for publication in Emerging Infectious Diseases, a journal published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. This article derived from a presentation Professor Fidler made to the faculty in November 1995, and he would like to thank again all faculty members for their comments and encouragement on the project. Gene Shreve has been elected to membership in the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy. NEWS FROM STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE GOVERNOR-ELECT OF THE SEVENTH CIRCUIT OF THE ABA/LSD A hearty congratulations to Octavia Florence (2L), who has been elected to serve next year as Governor of the Seventh Circuit of the American Bar Association/Law Student Division. She is currently serving as Lieutenant Governor for Diversity. ADMINISTRATIVE LAW HEARINGS AT SCHOOL Federal Administrative Law Judge Rudolph Jansen (from Cincinnati) will be holding hearings in our Moot Court Room on Tuesday afternoon of this week, and potentially all day on Wednesday and Thursday (i.e. February 27 - 29). Most of the cases he will hear involve Black Lung disputes from this area. He encourages students to enter the court room at any point and observe the proceedings. He also offered to explain the proceedings and answer any questions during breaks. SUMMER 1996 PARIS MEETING The final deadline is now approaching for those who wish to apply to go to Paris this May through the SPEA sponsored program. Two or three credits may be earned. A special meeting will be held this Wednesday, February 28, in room 124, to discuss the meeting. All who plan to attend or who want to consider it should attend. Present to answer questions will be students who attended the program last summer. Dean Fromm will be present to answer all questions about finances, loans, credits, etc. SPRING 1997 LONDON PROGRAM A special informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 5, at noon in room 120 to share information about the London Program next year. We will not know the actual courses that will be offered until August of this year, prior to the start of fall classes. Incidentally, the fall semester classes will commence on Wednesday, August 28. Present at the meeting will also be students who attended the program last year to answer questions and share their observations. APPLYING FOR LOANS FOR SUMMER 1996 AND ACADEMIC YEAR 1996-97 A reminder that there is a two step process for applying for educational loans for this summer and next year. 1. Return the FAFSA Renewal form that you should have received if you are a current borrower. If you need a new form, you can obtain one through the Financial Aids Office in Franklin Hall. This form is sent to the Illinois address noted in the materials; AND 2. Return the FAC (Financial Aid Certification) Sheet to the Financial Aids Office in Franklin Hall. These are single sheets found in the publication, "Balancing the Books." If you need one, extras are available in Dean Fromm's Office. For purposes of the number of credits anticipated for next year, the usual target is to project about 14 to 15 credits for each semester. If you are planning to go to summer school and want loans, it is necessary to take at least 2 credits in the 1st and 2nd sessions in order to get loans for both sessions. Your summer loans are computed based on what you put on this form, not on your actual registration. So, if you have submitted this form or will submit one with incorrect summer registration information, it is necessary to submit another one. Mark on the top of the sheet- "amended." Both of these forms have a priority date of March 1, i.e. a date that enables the Financial Aids Office to insure that your loans are processed in a timely manner. NEWS FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS JESSUP INTERNATIONAL LAW MOOT COURT TEAM RESULTS On February 10, the IU School of Law Jessup International Law Moot Court Team competed in the Central Regional Competition in Ada, Ohio. The Team won 2nd place in the best memorial contest and barely missed (and we are talking barely) the semifinal round, finishing fifth overall. After facing off against Fred "The Terminator" Jonassen and Mark "Ask that Question, Make My Day" Werling, one team was overheard saying: "The were AWESOME!!" And Amy "Hasta La Vista, Baby" Garrard and Vasilios "Captain Crunch" Tasikas so thoroughly crushed another team that it received no points for that round. Assisting this fearsome foursome in every round was TuongVan "Eye of the Tiger" Do. The proud coach of this team, Professor "Let's Go to the Scottish Restaurant" Fidler (you had to be there) tips his hat to each of the Jessup Team members and thanks them for all the hard work and long hours they dedicated to the competition. The School of Law can be very proud of this team. BLSA: A Thought For Black History Month "If you have no confidence in self you are twice defeated in the race of life. BUT ACT FAST! EVENTS, LECTURES Coercion and Agency in Feminist Jurisprudence - Spring 1996 Lecture Series. Wednesday, March 6, 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., Ballantine Hall 240 Professor Kathy Abrams, O'Byme Visiting Professor of Law, School of Law-Bloomington. The lecture series explores interdisciplinary research and scholarship focused on sexuality, feminism and culture through presentations by distinguished scholars. Lectures are open to the public, faculty and all students. Professor Kathy Abrams will explore a series of debates in law, political theory and contemporary politics that point to a need for new images of women's agency in feminist argumentation. Professor Abrams will outline an alternate account of women's agency that is less polar than many prevailing accounts, which portray women either as victims or as "superwomen," highlighting both the constraints on women's capacity for self-direction and women's ability to maneuver within and resist those constraints. Her talk will describe women's agency as a variable, contingent phenomenon, responsive, in particular, to institutional and political support. Finally, she will conclude with a consideration of how this new set of images might be introduced or reinforced through feminist legal advocacy. Diversity Panel On Tuesday, February 27, from noon -1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room come and hear fellow law students share personal experiences as to what life is like for members of minority groups at IU Law School and in the legal field in general.
