Information and articles for ILA should be submitted by Thursday at 1pm for inclusion in Monday's edition. In addition, submissions can be sent through campus E-mail to millerk@law.indiana.edu Letters to the Editor: Letters should be submitted by Wednesday at 5 pm for possible inclusion in Monday's issue. Letters must be delivered in person to Karen Miller in Room 240, and must contain the author's name and a telephone number where the author can be reached. Letters may not be submitted electronically. Letters will be published only on a space-available basis, and the decision of the Editor is final on all matters relating to the publication of letters. FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK This week's column will be shorter than usual, for reasons apparent in this week's "News From the Faculty" section (i.e., I've been out of town). Still, there are a few items that deserve mention... The "Tuesday Talks with Faculty" series, organized by Dean Kelly Townes of the Career Services Office to help IL's meet with faculty in an informal setting, will soon undergo scheduling changes. The schedule for these talks was arranged over the summer, before last-minute changes were made in the first-year class schedules to accommodate the large size of the entering class. One of those changes was the painful, but necessary, decision to move certain first-year classes into the noon hour. This produced an unintended conflict between those classes and the previously scheduled "Tuesday Talks" — a conflict that Dean Townes is taking steps to remedy. IL's can expect updated information on these events in their mailboxes in the near future. Some students may be asked to sign up again, if the original event is switched to a new date and time. (Incidentally, response to the "Tuesday Talks" has been very good -so good, in fact, that Dean Townes plans to continue the series into the spring.) One other note regarding an often-overlooked, yet potentially very helpful, activity of the Career Services Office: You may not know that students who wish to talk to an attorney in a location of interest, or a practice area of interest, can see Dean Townes or Kathleen Austin, the Assistant Director of Career Services, to get an alumnus/ae's name, address and phone number. Dean Townes or Kathleen will then go a step further and call the alum, to introduce the student and let the alum know that the student will be contacting them shortly. Now that all the alums are in a law school database, rather than only at the central university, the CSO is better able to provide this bridge. It has been my experience that I.U. alums greatly enjoy hearing from students and talking about their practice, location, type of employer, andjdaily work activities, while also catching up on what's going on at the law school. In many cases, the alum can provide the inquiring student with additional contact names for their job search, and can also pass along any job leads they may come across. Networking is a very productive way to uncover the "hidden" job market (i.e., job openings that are not advertised and hence not well known). I strongly encourage all students to tap into this job-search method, and to meet with Dean Townes or Kathleen to establish early connections with an alum. The Career Services folks also have suggestions for making effective contacts, and welcome the chance to discuss this element of job searching with interested students. That'sail for this week. Take care, and bye for now. — Joseph Hoffmann NEWS FROM THE FACULTY Professor Joseph Hoffmann served as Faculty Member and Program Co-Chair for a satellite teleconference on 4 September 16,1996 A more detailed description of the competition will be made available for anyone interested on Thursday, October 12th from Mary Michelle Yager in Room 300 of the law school.
