Description

A native of northwestern Indiana’s Newton County, Derek R. Melter earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University (2004) and a law degree from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law (2007) where he earned a place in the Order of the Coif Honor Society and graduated in the top three percent of his class.

After graduation, Molter served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Theresa L. Springmann, a United States District Court Judge for the Northern District of Indiana. He then practiced at Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP in Washington D.C. In 2008, Molter returned to Indiana where he became a partner in the Indianapolis-based firm of Ice Miller. In October of 2021 he was appointed to the Indiana Court of Appeals and in June 2022 Governor Eric Holcomb chose Molter to serve on the Indiana Supreme Court.
